DID YOU MISS IT? Bulega’s rollercoaster weekend as Razgatlioglu closes the title fight to just nine points
Misano provided some incredible Championship twists after a dramatic weekend of racing on the Adriatic coast
The halfway stage of the 2025 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship has been reached after an incredible visit to the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli”. The gap in the Championship battle was cut to just nine points while Bimota recorded their first podium in a quarter of a century at the Pirelli Emilia-Romagna Round – doing so on home soil. We’ve gathered the best moments from the weekend to help you catch up on the action…
A CALM FRIDAY: everyone racks up the laps
The opening day of track action was a mostly calm affair – especially compared to the Thursday bombshell dropped by Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) – although some riders did find the scorching temperatures tricky to deal with on track. Everyone was racking up the laps and mileage to get all the data they needed ahead of Saturday’s important Tissot Superpole session and Race 1.
RECORDS SMASHED ON SATURDAY: unbelievable pace from the top two
The Superpole session on Saturday set a new lap record as Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) claimed P1 on the timesheets on home soil. However, ‘Bulegas’ was given a three-place grid penalty for slow riding on the line, along with Andrea Iannone (Team Pata GoEleven), which meant the Championship leader started from fourth – and promoted Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) to P1 on the grid for Race 1. That didn’t stop him leading the race though after Razgatlioglu’s error at Turn 8 on the opening lap, although ‘El Turco’ did fight back to win. Elsewhere, Alex Lowes (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) came close to a podium with Bimota after fighting with Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team), with ‘Petrux’ just holding on to P3.
SUPERPOLE RACE DRAMA ON SUNDAY: a difficult day for Bulega
Sunday started off on a bad note for Bulega after a fall in Warm Up before things got worse in the Tissot Superpole Race. Going from pole this time, Bulega got a good start, but Axel Bassani (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) got a better one from third. At Turn 1, Bassani wiped out Bulega – and was given a double Long Lap Penalty for Race 2 – but that meant ‘Bulegas’ would start Race 2 from P10. He soon battled his way through the field but by the time he reached second place, Razgatlioglu was out of sight, and Bulega settled for second. Back to the Superpole Race, history was made by Alex Lowes as he secured Bimota’s first rostrum since their return and it was the first time since Australia 2000, when Anthony Gobert won, that they stood on a WorldSBK podium. In WorldSSP on Sunday, there were big Championship twists as Stefano Manzi (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) crashed from the lead, allowing Can Oncu (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team) to take a hard-fought victory and gain 25 points on the #62.
NEXT UP: Donington Park – make sure you don’t miss out!
The WorldSBK paddock heads to the United Kingdom next time out with Donington Park the venue for Round 7 of the 2025 season. Traditionally, Donington has been Razgatlioglu territory with the two-time Champion a winner there nine times. However, we’ve seen this year that Bulega is able to take the fight to Razgatlioglu even on circuits where ‘El Turco’ has traditionally been at his best. Expect Donington to be no different with more twists on the way. Elsewhere, WorldSSP returns after a dramatic weekend at Misano and WorldWCR will be back in action for the third round of the 2025 campaign.
